How We Missed The Power Of Touch

The sense of relief as contact is made at the beginning of a massage.

Throughout history, we have used our hands to give comfort and healing to one another, and in our busy lives, we all struggle to find time to slow down and listen to our bodies. Massage has evolved through the need to relieve pain and we communicate by touch to show compassion and connection. It was during the pandemic that many of us missed the touch that we rely on, from outside family members or friends, the people we connect with that give us those simple forms of communication, once removed that felt strangely absent. We may be unaware of quite how much it can ground us, and it is the power of touch that is so important at the beginning of a massage, as the therapists hands make initial contact, grounding us and encouraging us to breathe more deeply and let our bodies relax and let go; something we so rarely do.

The reassurance of touch

From birth, the power of touch grounds and reassures us, yet, as we age, we can forget how important touch can be. Massage can give us this grounding and bring healing to our system holistically.

The Greeks and Chinese were the first to develop specific massage techniques and it was Aristotle who argued that physical touch is the most fundamental of all the five senses.

As a practitioner, I am passionate about drawing knowledge and technique from both Eastern and Western techniques. Chinese massage uses acupressure techniques with a focus on energy flow, encouraging healing within the body, and by combining this approach with Western training, it is my focus to bring the most all round and holistic solutions to body healing. Working on energy flow and circulation, using stretching techniques, breaking down facia adhesions using Gua Sha technique along with specific methods to alleviate sciatica, headache and sinusitis pain, along with naturalift face massage to improve tone and skin texture. All techniques that use touch to both alleviate tension and bring a much greater sense of wellness and calm. In today’s fast paced, disconnected world, it is touch that will always be able to bring us back to centre and remind us of the importance of being able to slow down and connect body and mind.
